Butler CC offers a variety of student clubs and organizations. These groups provide ways for students to connect, meet others and make a difference both on campus and in the community.
According to the Butler CC website, “student life at Butler strives to enhance student opportunities during their college experience through activities and programs that facilitate student engagement and life-long learning. A great way to make the most of your college experience is to get involved in a student organization.”

In an effort to promote physical activity, build social connections and enhance the student experience, a pickleball club has come about at Butler CC. This club was started by students, and they went through a lengthy, yet effective process to be an official campus club.
Ethan Mulligan, the president of the Pickleball Club, and his friends had the idea to start the club while trying out different games. Some played tennis, so they decided to give pickleball a try. When other students wanted to join in, the club emerged.

Their welcome message states, “We’re thrilled to extend a warm welcome to you as a fellow member of the Butler Community College Pickleball Club! Whether you’re a seasoned player or a curious beginner, our club is the perfect place for pickleball enthusiasts of all skill levels to come together, have fun and stay active.”

To start a new club, there were several key steps involved. They had to make a proposal outlining the purpose, activities and structure of the club. This included details such as meeting times, officer positions and membership requirements. Alison Trammell, the sponsor of the club, helped guide the club through the whole process and provided support. Lastly, the club had to present their proposal at a Student Government Association (SGA) meeting and seek approval to start the club. The entire process from drafting the proposal to gaining approval took at maximum two weeks.

“It is important for new clubs to be brought to Butler Community College to enrich the student experience and improve the diverse interests and passions,” Mulligan said. “By offering a wide range of clubs and organizations, the college promotes student engagement and a sense of belonging within the campus community.”

In addition to addressing the benefits of the Pickleball Club, Mulligan offered advice to other students interested in starting new clubs on campus.

“For other groups starting new clubs, I would recommend conducting thorough research to ensure there is sufficient interest and need for the proposed club on campus,” Mulligan said. “Also, developing a clear plan and proposal outlining the club’s mission, activities, and structure. Building a strong leadership team committed to the success of the club and collaborating with campus resources, such as SGA, for guidance and support throughout the process.”

The Pickleball Club at Butler CC sends a welcome to all students interested in joining. Weekly meetings are scheduled every Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the basketball court near the residence halls.
